“Draft” an Adoptable Dog by May 9 and Start Them on Fresh Food for Free

In this article:

As the official pet food of the Dallas Cowboys, The Farmer’s Dog is hosting a dog draft. Here are the details:

Saturday, April 25
Noon
Tostitos Championship Plaza at The Star
Frisco, TX

This event will be a lot like the NFL Draft, only with adoptable dogs from Cane Rosso Rescue who will be drafted to their forever families. If you’re in the market for a dog and love the Dallas Cowboys, this is your moment.

In addition to the dogs, the event will feature an appearance from a Cowboys player and two cheerleaders—plus a raffle to win a signed Cowboys jersey.

But the main attraction, obviously, is the dogs.

Whoever adopts each of these stars by May 9 will receive their first box of The Farmer’s Dog for free. Additionally, they’ll receive $300 toward their fresh food subscription (See the Terms & Conditions below, which also include simple instructions on how to redeem the box and credit).

Now, let’s meet the prospects:

An adoptable dog named Rocky.

Rocky

Approximate age: 1 year

This bluetick coonhound/pointer/Treeing Walker coonhound mix gets along with kids, cats, and other dogs, so he’s sure to be a great locker-room presence. He’s food-motivated, which means he should be easy to coach. Just make sure the equipment manager is warned that he may sometimes have a hard time resisting the urge to root through your laundry basket.

An adoptable dog named Scout.

Scout

Approximate age: 1 year

This white Labrador mix gets along well with other dogs and will be a great teammate. But know that he has lots of energy, so you’ll have to give him plenty of playing time—this is not a dog who wants to spend his days sitting on the bench. He’s deaf, so he follows eye contact and hand signals.

An adoptable dog named Nova.

Nova

Approximate age: 4 months

Approximate weight: 18 pounds

This pointer loves kids, cats, and other dogs, so she’ll likely become a fan favorite. She’s having fun with her foster family and is looking for a forever home. She’s already 18 pounds and is only 4 months old, so you can expect her to put on some more weight by the time her rookie contract is up.

An adoptable dog named Penny.

Penny

Approximate age: 9

This German shorthaired pointer mix came to Cane Rosso after being rescued from people who’d been cruel to her. Per the organization, despite her difficult circumstances, this gray-muzzled beauty is “gentle,” “trusting,” and “grateful.” She loves affection; is good with kids, cats, and other dogs; and is a connoisseur of fine sticks.

An adoptable dog named Olympia.

Olympia

Approximate age: 4 months

Approximate weight: 16 pounds

This pointer/Lab mix was “found as a stray singleton puppy.” She’s young, but it’s already clear that she has big-play potential: the rescue reports that she’s very friendly, and particularly fond of toys and other dogs.

An adoptable dog named Cleo.

Cleo

Approximate age: 4 1/2 years

Approximate weight: 56 pounds

This Treeing Walker coonhound mix has been waiting a long time for her new home—since December of 2023. The rescue says this about her: “Cleo is a special girl who needs a special person. She’s quirky. She’s loyal. She LOVES her people—once you become her people. But you’ve got to go slow, respect her pace, and let her come to you.” They say she’s “not for everyone,” but will do well in the right home with a patient person who gives her the right training. They report that she gets along best with male dogs, does OK with cats, and loves toys and being outside.

An adoptable dog named Jack.

Jack

Approximate age: 1 year

Approximate weight: 45 pounds

This Treeing Walker coonhound mix is sharp, and already knows his playbook: he has skills like “sit,” “down,” “leave it,” and others down pat. The rescue also identifies him as a “massive goofball,” so chances are he’ll be a hit on the team bus. He’s great with kids and other pets, and loves playtime and a good nap.

An adoptable dog named Priscilla.

Priscilla

Approximate age: 11 months

Approximate weight: 43 pounds

Per the rescue, this border collie/pointer mix loves to play, and would do well in a home with a child who’s at least 8 years old. She’s comfortable in cars, so she should travel well to road games. A born athlete who’s also cerebral, she’ll do best in a home where she gets physical and mental exercise—they say she’s a good candidate for Flyball and agility (basically the dog equivalent of the NFL Combine).

An adoptable dog named Lucy.

Lucy

Approximate age: 3 years

This Brittany Spaniel has star potential, but will need some extra coaching. Per the organization: “[Lucy] didn’t get the early socialization that helps dogs feel safe and confident, so new people and environments can be a lot to take in. Lucy isn’t fearful—just unsure. New things take her a little longer to process. She’s still figuring out where she fits and how to navigate the world.” As such, she needs a patient adopter who will give her the support she needs to succeed. Lucy likes playing with other dogs, but would do best in a quiet home without cats or young kids.
